A study in Newcastle, England, has revealed the potential dangers of buying medicines online without a prescription.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that men who used a prescription-only medicine such as Viagra could be at a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
The drug, which contains sildenafil citrate, acts on the walls of the blood vessels in the penis and increases blood flow to the penis when sexually aroused. But if it's taken in the wrong way, it could cause permanent damage, according to researchers.
Researchers at the University of Newcastle were the first to examine this potential risk, which occurred in more than 10,000 men.
They found that men who were prescribed Viagra bought it from a pharmacy or online without a prescription, but were not able to afford the drug.
Viagra's blue-toned tablets were sold online to men who had been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction, but not a doctor's prescription.
The study was funded by Pfizer Inc. and researchers at the University of Newcastle.
But the results are still preliminary, the University of Newcastle noted.
The researchers say it may be a case of an underreporting of the potential dangers of Viagra in general, particularly in the UK.
Viagra has been a top-selling prescription drug for men in the UK for nearly a decade, and is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction.
But in the US, a number of companies are selling Viagra over the counter.
In the United States, two large generic versions of the drug have also been available over the counter, and some have even advertised it as a cheaper alternative to Viagra. Pfizer has yet to issue a warning about the dangers of buying medicines online without a prescription.
In the United Kingdom, two medicines, called Viagra Connect and Viagra Dapoxetine, are also sold as over-the-counter.
The results of the study come two days after the National Health Service, which provides health and welfare services, issued a public advisory about the dangers of buying drugs online.
Dr Chris Jones, head of pharmacy and practice at Dr Fox, said: "Online purchases of prescription medicines such as Viagra and Cialis should be avoided, and it is essential that patients understand the dangers of buying medicines online and seek advice from their healthcare providers."
But if it's taken in the wrong way, it could cause permanent damage.
